The Corner Store on Semaphore

Week 39 of 52

Milk – Alexandrina

Wifi – No

Cappuccino Cost – $3.50

Ristretto Cost – $3.50

Beans Roaster and blend – Cirelli

Wanted to try coffee at this cafe last week but it was a bit busy so I popped in today and ordered a ristretto and cappuccino.

The presentation wasn’t what I expected, with those air bubbles I was sure I wasn’t in a place that knew coffee and started to have second thoughts about coming here. The taste of the bubbles was creamy, however the texture wasn’t on the mark at all but the more I had of it the better it became. It seems what the barista had done,  was too make good micro-foam which was indeed in the cup but then it was topped with foam that was less than satisfactory. What I did like about this froth was the amount of it and seldom do I get a cappuccino with lots of it, had the foam been consistent this would of been a great start. With the froth gone I can see the roast is on the dark side, and yes the taste is erring towards a ballsy coffee but this one had some character with tastes of toffee and cereal coming through.

The ristretto as below is not a ristretto, the base possibly is but i’ll never know as it was saturated in milk and put in the wrong cup. I’ve had a few variations on a ristretto, this being the  first with milk and milk isnt one of the ingredients in a ristretto. Its just coffee.

Upon leaving I had enquired about the beans – no one could tell me for certain which blend it was. The backbone to any cafe is the coffee and I reckon that at least to know what the blend is shows a little more than just turning up to a job and going through the motions. Overall a bit of a mish-mash on today’s experience and a ristretto that i’ll never forget.

  1. Excellent blog, very determined, great to see you visiting so many places!

Coffee Branch, Bar 9, UR Caffe and Paddy’s Lantern are easily the best and most CONSISTENT.

I see how you ask all the cafe’s what beans and blend they use, sometimes you can just tell that the barista or waiter just wouldn’t have a clue :( It’s Adelaide, and only the coffee bars that take it seriously will know.

Really great blog, way way more informative than beanhunter (for Adelaide).
Now I’m gonna go try Argo on Parade for a third time, and hope the coffee’s better than the first two times… :)

  2. Hi Ed,

Cheers for kind comment. Bit surprising when the cafe cannot tell you what beans they are using isnt it. Certainly shows lack of interest on their behalf. (or at least that of the barista)

I havent been back to Argos since my review. A few weeks ago I went back and ordered a ristretto – wow. I went back again and ordered another one and it was also lovely. The baristas have an understanding of coffee at Argos but sometimes due to the customer numbers they deal with perhaps lack a bit of consistency Ed. Hope your coffee is good today.
