I Headed off to Henley Beach Road this week, last time I was here I enjoyed my coffee and although I had a bit of a cold, signs of a good cup were there. Consistancy is of utmost importance, so how was my coffee today and can it be matched from last time? I ordered a cappuccino and a ristretto.
Presentation was pretty much standard with the top being half blanketed with chocolate powder and no real pattern. I first tasted the foam that was free of the chocolate, it did have good mouth feel and creamy texture but I would of liked it a bit more tight and compact, this would of taken it to a level of the highest quality so a little short in this department. So with the froth gone, I’m looking at the shade of coffee colour in my cup and its looking ideal, and as I dig-in the taste matches my initial thoughts from first sip to last. Well rounded, balanced, medium body and what can be descibed as a feel good coffee with the milk taking a back seat and playing the support role in which the beans shone through and made the milk based coffee its own. The way they (the coffee beans) presented themselves in this coffee can only be described as elegant.
The amount of coffee in my ristretto was looking a bit too little on presentation but good colour. It was oozy, thick and intense however, it was like a tease and I wanted more. In the cafe’s that understand and know how to make a ristretto, commonly the amount served is around 20ml+ and usually not less than that. Coffee by the Beans know how to get the correct ristretto consistency, but just need to run the coffee machine a wee bit more to give a full size ristretto and this will give better mouth feel and overall taste making it o-so-good.
Not a place that aims for mediocrity with elements of the coffee that are really good and the backbone to this is the coffee beans which isn’t matched by too many other roasters. I couldn’t leave without buying any could I.

I think the only thing that bugs me here is the location, it seems like one of the best coffee places you’ve been by far. But stuck in the middle of nowhere between the beach and the CBD. A better location would seem the attract a hell of a lot more business.
Hi Alex, I am the owner of the the business and your point is very valid however as our first coffee house you have to start somewhere. we desire to open another in 2012 but other than CBD where else around Adelaide would you like to us?
Regards Vincent.
People in Lockleys need coffee too.
It is rewarding to actually hit a place that gets it isn’t it?
SanitybyCoffee – you have hit the nail on the head – it is the best thing ever to find a place that cares about the coffee – and Vincent and the guys at CBTB love their coffee.
Vincent – how about an espresso bar on the south coast? There is a great little corner location currently vacant in Goolwa – by the river by the beach – you could call it ‘Coffee By The Beanch’ – in a town of 9000 people there is no great coffee – and in summer when the population hits around 25,000 – where do we go for coffee??? Just a suggestion. Other than that – North Adelaide (O’Connell Street) could do with a serious espresso bar – tekka is good (Tynte) – but other than that it is just franchisees or food places that also have a machine….
I’m not sure could you fit another kilo of chocolate powder on that half of the cappuccino?…..bit of overkill there, you should be getting a taste of coffee from your first sip……not a choc powder moustache!
I’ve only been to CBTB once, but love it too. For someone who knows good coffee and can proudly say makes dam good coffee, Coffee By The Beans was a delightful experience. Good review Bobby.
If only some people had nice things to say (regarding “lol”)…clearly this person has never worked as a true barista before and therefore doesn’t understand what it’s like to have their handy work critiqued… you twit.
