The Pantry on Egmont

Week 31 of 52

Milk – Tweedvale

Wifi – Yes

Beans and Roaster – DeGroot and the Beans are Single Origin Honduras.

Ristretto – $3.00

Cappuccino – $3.50

Decisions on where too have coffee..MMmmm, can they make a ristretto comes to mind every week prior too my visit, and looking at the coffee art on the Pantries website, they possibly could, but then again many places give good presentation on their website but drastically fall short in reality for coffee making and knowledge.

I ordered a ristretto and a cappuccino.

The cappuccino as below was presented in old style, no coffee art as on their website but simply a dash of chocolate powder – again, I ask why businesses do this? You are promoting one thing yet doing another. Hoping the rest of the coffee is better than the presentation, I tasted the froth and was getting a creamy, rich ,thick dense milk. This was nice.

With the froth all gone, the coffee was next to get into and this part had a good balance of creaminess to coffee with a mild coffee strength probably suitable to most peoples tastes.

The ristretto as below had a mixed initial reaction from me. Looking at it it has good colour but with a dark wavy slick through the middle – could this bit be burnt or bitter or will it give off a piece of very strong coffee? Well,  It had good mouth feel with a thick body and velvety mild taste. My concentration on the dark slick gave me nothing, yes I was looking for faulty coffee and for what ever reason the slick didn’t impact the coffee in a negative manner and overall it was a good ristretto.

It’s not too often that I go to a place that can make a ristretto, and the judgment of this type of coffee for me gives a good indication of how knowledgeable/skillfull the barista is. Are they just there to make a cappuccino or latte as most places do or do they know a few more coffees?

My coffee experience today showed me the latter.

  1. Good Review – I’m just sorry your experience was as good as my first time at the Pantry.

I think one of the biggest issues facing Adelaide coffee and a cause for immediate lament is the consistency of our baristas – when you are in a place and their number one is on – the coffee is fantastic, and you rave about the place. Your friends go, and someone else is behind the machine and they all look at your wondering what you have been drinking….

Thanks and keep up the dedication!!

  2. I have been thinking about this lately TheRev – there have been a couple of occasions where i have made a return to some place and the coffee has been not as good as previously, and possibly that was because my coffee was made by a different person. Much like a good restaurant the quality and consistency of the coffee must remain just that – quality and consistant. A cafe cannot expect customers returning if one day its fantastic and the next its not.

  3. Maybe your review wasnt good enough for the owners liking, I hear they are looking for a new manager and head barista lol

  4. @lol, yeh I heard on the grapevine something was going on. @SanitybyCoffee Its a bit of an indication of a cafe that takes coffee a little more seriously.

Got something to say?
