Seems a popular place this little cafe situated off a side street. We managed to get somewhere to sit and I ordered a cappuccino and a ristretto. The cappuccinos’ presentation (as below) is very ordinary with no coffee art and a sprinkle of chocolate dust. So what does it taste like …. well the texture was very dense and it felt good in the mouth, this part I really enjoyed but was let down by the taste, it’s as though the milky, creamy layers had been stripped out to get something that was quite bland and unattractive tasting. With the froth all gone, the coffee was next in line to drink and its temperature was on the hot side of ‘normal’, but acceptable, the coffee taste was … ok, with a reasonable balance of coffee strength, milk and good body which went down pretty well, but can’t help thinking that if the milk tasted better in the froth this would of filtered through too the coffee and my cup would of been all the better for it. We can’t under-estimate what milk does to a coffee.
Below is the Ristretto – presentation was very intimidating with a mushy, heavy, thick and dark look, some of the descriptive sign’s I look for but in this ristretto it looked like it had crossed the line and gone too far and I would of liked a little more coffee in my cup, a bit too short on liquid in this one. The taste I may of found was of fruit, but in this drink it was hard to find something, there was no bitterness but it needed more coffee which in turn may of opened up more flavours and allowed me to potentially enjoy it more.
I don’t usually comment on the cups but as soon as it was presented to me it did cross my mind that this one for the ristretto was too big…. too tall, but perhaps the quantity of coffee that was in it had skewed my impression but it did seem rather big.
Both of these suffered from their lack of presentation punch.
