Week 20 of 52
Milk – Tweedvale
Wifi – No
Beans – 5senses and the blend is ‘Crompton Road’
Cappuccino Cost – $3.40
Ristretto Cost – $3.20
I first ordered the cappuccino and a short while later asked for a ristretto.
The froth taste on the cappuccino just didn’t hit the highs of other Tweedvale froths i’ve had in the past, it tasted a bit flat, dull, although it was creamy in texture. The rim tasted bitter and from memory, the last one I had with a bitter rim was at Bracegirdles Burnside, although in both cases the bitter taste completly dissappeared when I drank the coffee. This coffee at The Grain and Bean was full flavoured (phew I thought, as lately i’ve had quite few milky ones elsewhere), with a good rich taste, but because of how the froth tasted, the milk in the coffee possibly tainted the coffee flavour a little.
The ristretto below was of thick consistancy with a chocolatey brown coloured crema. The thick consistancy gets me excited as this is how it should be. Tasting this coffee gets me thinking about branding from 20 years ago. Schwepps adverts on telly back then used the word ‘effervescence’ in its description of their carbonated drinks, well I certaintly had some effervescence in my ristretto – the sensation but without the bubbles. The drink rounded off with a nutty after taste and overall had a really good mouth feel, nice, enjoyable drink.
Going to this little shopping centre I didn’t expect to get a quality made ristetto like the one I had and it was refreshing to be served by friendly staff unlike some of the cold staffed cafe’s i’ve been to.

You said the rim was bitter… I have found this in the past when the glass/cup has been sitting on top of the machine and not been used or washed properly in he past just a thought?
Not sure how this comes about Matt, I have asked around a bit and chances are that its not from a overly hot cup or a dirty cup, although a extra hot cup could damage the coffee I reckon but the one I had was the right temp.
Dunno.
