Ristretto Cost $2.50
This place was one of the first recommendations I was given, so off I went and had some coffee there for this weeks writeup. Ordering the coffee’s I chose a ristretto and a cappuccino.
The presentation of the cappuccino is probably typical of most places in Adelaide. A closer look at the froth and it certaintly appears silky and tight, good to see. Tasting the froth from the side without the chocolate powder and it has a good mouth feel – thick, creamy and silky – all the qualities of good froth, wished there was a bit more of that to enjoy! and so I polished off the chocolaty part of the froth and now, with the head all gone, it was onto the coffee. The colour of it was looking good, I always get worried when a pale coffee is presented to me so no worries for this one. I’m getting some of the bean profile in this one, dampness, swampy like, perhaps even cow hide. Good to get something out of a milk based coffee, doesn’t always happen you know.
Enjoyed this Cap.

The ristretto was looking a bit heavy and rich upon first glance. A bit of a tilt confirms its somewhat thickish, something we are looking for. A smell of it gives a heavy scent of moss and as it goes down the hatch a intense fruity taste comes through.
The coffee prices are good at The Lunch Room, and Angelo the barista is very comfortable behind that counter, he belongs there making coffee. They had some single origin coffee which they had run out of so I got the ‘house blend’ – still good. The single origin beans I was told will be back by the time you read this.
The Lunch Room Espresso Bar

Oh, I do love The Lunch Room. I stumble in half-asleep at around 6:50am each weekday morning, and Angelo spoils me with a lovely flat white and puts up with my sleepy murmurings and dumb questions like “what’s a ristretto?”
Tried a ristretto this morning for the first time. I like it, I agree it’s got an intense flavour (perhaps especially so for me as I’m used to milkier coffee), but very agreeable and I think I shall have another tomorrow.
MMmmmmm sounds like a must-try place.
Angelo was saying that folks have always popped in for snack/lunch etc, but not really coffee. A couple of years ago they added to the Lunch Room sign out-side ‘espresso bar’, hoping to increase coffee sales. Generally speaking, when the owner runs the place (in other words – he is actually there) and is either a barista himself or has a coffee interest, the coffee is usually better and this does apply to The Lunch room.
Good on you Tarale for trying something different.
Yup, love the place.
Double espresso in the morning & a single of the single origin at lunch. Both at $3 compared to some others in the area that go nearer to $4 for a double that doesn’t come close in quality.
p.s The food’s pretty awesome too!
