Cikolatte

Week 16 of 52

Wifi – Yes

Milk – Tweedvale

Beans from Kicco. The Blend is ‘Ottoman’

Cappuccino – $3.30

Ristretto – $3.00

Headed to Melbourne Street this week to Cikolatte. I ordered a cappuccino and a ristretto.

Cappuccino presentation was good, you can see some latte art which is always good to have this eye candy on a coffee. Shows the barista has some skills, has done training and cares about their presentation. The chocolate powder I dont like as it has small sugar crystals in it, getting those little bits of sugar just doesnt work with a cappuccino, keep that crunch for something else. The froth was silky and creamy with a decent amount that is suited to a cappuccino. The colour of the coffee was looking good, darkish … tasting full bodied, a pleasant coffee, you know it was not as heavy or ‘hummer like’ as last weeks one at Caffeteca, but a little more easy drinking, yet full.

As the ristretto wasn’t on the menu, I asked anyway to see what the response would be, I got an instant ‘yes’, it was a positive and a instant reply and so I ordered it. Had they replied in a less forthcoming manner then I would of chose something else. So there I was…. waiting for my ristetto but it never came.  As it turned out the manager had thought I wanted the ristretto to be used as the base for my cappuccino. We sorted it out and my ristretto came with a crema that was somewhat thin, coffee was a tad watery and really this was a coffee that had no personality, no character – this drink need to be talking to you, mine didn’t.

Overall, good cappuccino, but the ristretto needs work. One other observation, I could hear the coffee beans being ground behind the counter for what sounded like every coffee that came in, something good to hear.

  1. Seems a little unfair to say the ristretto “needs work” if it isn’t on the menu. They went out of their way to make it for you even though its not their usual thing – that’s they way they treat all their customers and that’s why people keep coming back.

  2. Cikolatte coffee is the reason that I get out of bed in the morning :) ) It has become a little hub on Melbourne St where a whole range of people meet by chance for coffee. It just has that vibe. I know everybody enjoys different things about a coffee, but I love both their blend and their handling of the milk. I would cross town for a cuppa Cikolatte.

I have never ever had a ristretto, but really must try one. Each of your posts has me 1 step closer to trying it. :)

  3. Your reviewing seems to have lacked consistency in itself. Here at week 16 you quote ” Had they replied in a less forthcoming manner then I would of chose something else.” yet in current weeks cafes without a ristretto on the menu and no idea have still had you order one. I follow your blog weekly but in all seriousness spelling mistakes, bad punctuation and poor effort on your views makes me wonder. You have reviewed many cafes I enjoy going to which makes me wonder where can I go and try your idea of a “perfect coffee”

  4. Hi Noah, Cheers for reading weekly. There have been a few times along this journey where I nearly had another type of coffee drink instead of the usual ristretto/cappuccino but always end up drinking those two, or in some cases only one when for whatever reason I didn’t review another drink. As it stands today its probably better that I stick with the same coffee’s as i’ve come pretty far into this, only 15 or so more cafes to visit. As a general rule I find that if a cafe can make a ristretto, then there is a very high chance that their cappuccino will match it, however it doesn’t work the other way.

Hope you continue to read and do try those cafes which strive to give us great coffee.
