Week 9 of 52
Milk – Tweedvale
Beans – 5 senses, blend ‘Spanish something’??
Cost – Cappuccino & Short Black $3.30ea.
The 3 coffee’s arrive I ordered, short black and cappuccino and a latte for the other half, short black and latte are placed on the table whilst the cappuccino makes it way back to the kitchen for some reason. I didnt see the top of the cappuccino but i’m guessing chocolate sprinkles where added? It comes back and what was bizzarre is that I noticed that the froth was eating away at itself, i’m guessing that the chocolate sprinkles was responsible for this, perhaps to heavy for the airy froth, i’ve not come across this before in my coffee journey. Based on presentation alone for my cappuccino it should never have been given to me but tipped out and another one made.
The coffee itself didnt taste to bad, pleaseant, but boy, that froth, how they could serve that I dunno.
Photo taken as soon as the cappuccino was placed in front of me.
Below Short Black
My short black as above, was acidic, big, bold and full of body but ended with a burnt after taste.
I had phoned through to ask a few short questions about the coffee they were using and was given the company where the beans come from – 5 senses, and the blend ”spanish something”…….. “no, I dunno” said the person on the other end who was rather abrupt and seemed uninterested in my few questions I was asking so I pushed no further on the coffee blend.
Whilst they are using beans which can produce very good coffee, and I do get the impression this is what they want to do, Dunks and Unley have fallen way short of expectations. Using good beans doesnt equal good coffee, there are many other factors that go into a good cup of coffee. Bad froth, burnt coffee, forgotten chocolate sprinkles, unacceptable presentation – these are not the attributes a coffee should have. Some professional training and attention to detail will go along way as well as some telephone politeness towards customers goes without saying.

That’s a pretty bad effort. I thought my coffee attempts at home were bad, but even I can’t stuff up the froth that much.
probably worth noting that they’ve only been open and trading for two weeks. While I agree with the comments above, it seems a bit premature to give such a damning review so early in a cafe’s trading history.
“Should never of” – Incorrect.
“Should never have” – Correct.
I was looking forward to going there but that Capp looked poor! Have you ever returned or refused to pay for a coffee based on poor presentation/ taste??
I think I saw recently on seek that they were looking for a Batista and were prepared to train them??
You can always rely on the spelling nazi’s to be around, thanks Mr.Johnny Grammar i have corrected the error. Matt i haven’t returned any coffee based on poor presentation/ taste.
Thanks for all replies folks.
yeh that cap looks pretty bad……I wonder what was going on there?
Visited dunks and unley on friday.
Ordered a soy latte and toasted banana bread with butter – it was fantastic!! Would definitely recommend.
Slowest service I have ever seen, cafe empty and still 20 minutes on three coffee’s…and they STILL got the order wrong. ANd dont even think about ordering the ‘fruit bread’, unless you like paying $6.50 for ONE slice of Bakers Delight fruit loaf.
PASS
Well they must have improved as I went in there yesterday (18/5) and the cappuccino was spot on. It was made quickly and the froth was frothy and had sprinkles
. The flavour was delicious and it was thick and creamy. I really enjoyed the coffee and the atmosphere. The staff were lovely in person. I’ve heard they make a mean breakfast so I will be back to try that.
i would love to read another review from here bobby…
