Espresso Royale

Week 7 of 52

Milk from Paris Creek, full cream

Beans by De Groot Coffee, Autumn Espresso Blend.

Cappuccino cost $3.50

Quaint little place down on Magill Rd see’s me dropping by this place for a cuppa. What are we in for today? Well for one we have Johnny Cash background music, something different, dont think i’ve come across that before in a coffee shop and as a Johnny Cash fan, it was great although I shouldn’t really admit that, should I?Now the coffee arrives, the presentation and froth was very uninspiring and pedestrian-like with quite a thin layer more suited for a flat white. No pattern on this coffee just a hit of cocoa powder and whilst patterns arent the be-all-and-end-all of a good coffee, attention to detail and going that extra mile goes a long way.

Paris Creek full cream milk found its way into my coffee and whilst this benefits Paris Creek Milk company through sales, it didnt do well at all in the cappuccino I had at Espresso Royale. It just didn’t gel with this coffee, it killed it. To rich and very little to no coffee flavour. The coffee needed a stronger flavour profile or the milk should be ditched as they just don’t belong in the same cup. It just left me bored and unimpressed.

A few people have recommended this place, but my cuppa certaintly wasn’t the kind a recommendation should be.

  1. hey mate. i admire your the courage of your endeavour with this blog. a great idea. may i suggest trying black coffee at every place you go to. espresso royale can make great coffee, but ordering only a cap is not fair on whoever’s making it or the place you’re going to. just my tip, take it or leave it. cheers!

  2. Agreed with Luke, I’m here practically everyday day and the black coffee is beautiful!! At the moment that have a Harrar blend…. one of the best I’ve ever tasted!!

  3. A good coffee shop/barista should have the expertise to cover any coffee which is on their menu, particularly with big sellers such as milk based ones. These far outsell all other coffee’s and so plenty of practice would of been done to nail it. A restaurant cannot make the excuse that i should of tried another meal because its better, whatever they sell has to be good, no excuse. I do try black and white coffee’s, sometimes both, sometimes just one depending i what i feel like.
    Thankyou for posting.

  5. Paris creek is the best milk on the market and espresso royale know their coffee inside out…don’t agree with this review at all….

  6. I agree Sarah, I have been trying coffee all over Australia and I keep going back to espresso royale. I love the fact that we get REAL Milk from Happy cows…

  7. Sure, Paris creek milk is good local stuff, i use it at home all the time. I do need to return to Espresso Royale sometime and try the coffee again.
